Ramon Reyes
Born in Venezuela, Ramon Reyes knows what it means to leave one home and create another. In Palm Springs, he has found a landscape that feels familiar, a place where desert and lush greenery coexist, and where isolation can feel like paradise.
How did leaving Venezuela and starting over shape you as an artist?
Having to leave my country abruptly, starting over with nothing and learning a new language forced me to think outside the box to express myself and create work.
What is it about the Palm Springs landscape that feels familiar to you?
It gives me a sense of familiarity with my home growing up. One moment you see nothing but desert, and the next you feel like you are in a lush, green paradise.
Palm Springs offers both glamour and isolation. Why does that combination speak to you?
I love creating beauty and glamour through hair, makeup and costumes, yet living in Palm Springs gives you a sense of being isolated from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the world. We live in our own isolated paradise here.
